High-Profile Romance

Celebrities really are “just like us,” as Us magazine’s tagline goes—only with bigger bank accounts. So for Valentine’s Day, they tend to pull out all the stops to celebrate their relationships.

  •  Courtney Cox celebrated ex-hubby David Arquette’s juvenile quirks one year by buying him a carousel horse.
  • Last year Heidi Klum told “Good Morning America” that she was making her husband, Seal, “a very fun box of heart things…kind of like an explosion of things—confetti hearts with cute underwear and chocolates.”
  • Jay-Z once gave Beyonce a platinum cell phone for V-Day.
  • Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos enjoyed a romantic dinner for two at New York’s Minetta Tavern on Valentine’s Day last year.
  • Howard Stern proposed to his wife, Beth Ostrosky, on Valentine’s Day in 2007 with a 5.2-carat emerald-cut engagement ring valued at over $250,000.
  • Katy Perry gifted hubby Russell Brand with a lilac-colored Bentley Brooklands for Valentine’s last year.
  • Julia Roberts told an ABC News reporter last year that for V-Day, she and husband Danny Moder were “just going to be making out for the full 24 hours.”  — Emili Vesilind

The Meaning of Flowers

Flowers talk. Specific varieties convey a particular sentiment—perfect for telegraphing deep (or even shallow!) feelings on Valentine’s Day. Here’s what some of the most popular Valentine’s Day blossoms communicate.

Roses: Roses have been the ultimate romantic flower for thousands of years—the ancient Greeks and Romans associated them with love goddesses Aphrodite and Venus. But each color boasts a distinct meaning: red is for romance; white signifies humility and innocence; yellow represents friendship; orange imparts desire; pink expresses gratitude; and purple represents love at first sight.

Tulips: Yellow tulips symbolize cheer; white stems convey forgiveness; purple represents royalty; and red tulips are associated with perfect love. Legend has it that the tulip’s inky black center represents a lover’s heart, darkened by the heat of passion.

Peonies: The symbolic flower of China is associated with prosperity, good fortune, and happy marriages.

Carnations: Light red carnations signify admiration (perfect for teacher gifts), while darker red carnations signal deep romantic love. White carnations mean purity and luck, while pink carnations indicate gratitude.

Orchids: Orchids have long been a symbol of virility; Greek women believed that if during their pregnancy, the father of the baby ate large orchids, the child would be a boy). In recent times orchids have come to symbolize rare beauty and luxury.

Lilies: White lilies symbolize chastity and virtue; Peruvian lilies represent friendship; white stargazer lilies—a common funereal flower—express sympathy; and pink stargazer lilies are associated with wealth and prosperity.   — Emili Vesilind

Lulu Powers 2012 Collection of Cards, Invites, and Social Stationery

We have had such an enthusiastic response to the Lulu Powers summer collection of cards that we couldn’t wait to embark on another one. The star chef brought a fun, preppy, East Coast vibe to her first outing with us. For the new group of invitations and greetings, Lulu riffed on visual imagery from her past, namely a kilt and other patterned clothing she wore as a child. But there’s a modern touch, as well; a swatch of wallpaper from her home in Los Angeles inspired the look of one card. See the entire collection here.

New Year’s Resolution Cards

It’s January 3: do you know where your New Year’s resolutions are? We have managed to break a few of our own already. One that we have so far kept: to maintain a sense of humor about vows of self-improvement. “Send (More) Dirty Texts” should be fairly easy to achieve. “I will not talk about baby names on the first date.” Well, we’ll try. Simple and inexpensive décor can look amazing when the palette is harmonious.

Amy Neunsinger on Color Combinations That Glamorize Your Home

Often when I photograph a home for a magazine, I note that very simple and inexpensive furniture and décor can look amazing when the palette is harmonious. This is something I kept in mind when I created the look for my own home, where I live with my husband, our two kids, and a dog named Lennon.

There are two reasons for the pale color scheme. Aesthetically, I like the clean look. But there’s a professional reason for it, too. I use my home as a photo studio for everything from a Giada De Laurentiis cookbook to an advertising campaign for Target. The house gets rented by other companies for shoots, as well. So the location has to “disappear” to serve their needs (if you’ve ever been to a photo studio, you know what I mean).

The few colored items in the house are décor accents, such as throw pillows with linen covers. They are lightweight and thus easily stashed away. I can swap their casing, which also makes it a breeze to tweak the look of the house.

There’s one room in the house that doesn’t get much light. And that’s the one place where I didn’t want white walls. In a dim room, white can take on grim shades of gray. So we painted it turquoise with crimson-colored beams.

Because even a natural-hued home should have some kind of color somewhere.
